Inuit Eskimo Inupiaq Yupik Harbor Seal Skin Parka, early xxxx?s Vintage; Fur hood, cuffs, and bottom; beaded trim.
? Note: I have tried to describe this parka to the best of my knowledge and research. Please view the photos and ask any questions.
? It has a fur ruff on the hood, cuffs and bottom of the parka, probably of fox,wolf or wolverine.
? The bottom of the parka, the sleeve cuffs, and the top of the shoulders also contain beaded designs on caribou or reindeer calf hide. (The designs, colors and the materials onto which the beads are stitched, and with what they are sewn with, are factors in placing a date, and geographic or tribal origin on a piece.)
? The beaded trim and the lining of the parka is hand stitched. I haven't examined the construction of the parka itself but assume it is also hand-stitched.
? The zip-front parka is lined with a black cotton lining and has a large heavy-duty brass Talon zipper in the front.
? The parka can be zipped to make a snorkel hood.
? The condition of all the fur is excellent, no shedding or splitting of the hide with the exception of a small pencil tip hole on upper part of the right sleeve.
? It has not been allowed to dry out.
? The entire parka has been well taken care of and is soft and supple.
? It can definitely be worn.
? The parka is shown on a 6' foot mannequin but measurements were taken with the parka laying flat. Please compare your measurements with these:
? 26? Pit to pit- (double this for total width).
? 24? bottom width (double this for total width);
? 20? Underarm sleeve length.
? 25? Sleeve length from shoulder to bottom of sleeve.
? 7? from neck seam to shoulder seam.
? 26? from neck to bottom measured on back of parka.
? Bottom of parka is trimmed with 1.25? x 1.25? patches of calf hide embellished with beading;
Shoulders and cuffs of parka are trimmed with .75?x.75? patches of calf hide embellished with beading.
? There is some fraying of the lining near the bottom, app. 1.5? x 5? and 2? x 3.5?. Email for more photos.
NOTE TO PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Advocates: The seal fur used in this parka was legally harvested by Native American Inuit/ Eskimo people in Alaska in the early xxxx?s. My father bought this from a friend who had gone to Anchorage to work. These parkas were made by the Inuit women for their own use and the tourist trade (and sometimes included the snow pants) to support their local economy. Harbor seal numbers were severely reduced in Puget Sound and Alaska during the first half of the twentieth century by a state-financed population control program. This bounty program ceased in xxxx, and in xxxx, harbor seals became protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and by Washington State. The MMPA's moratorium on taking marine mammals has limited hunting of harbor seals to Alaska Natives for subsistence and handicraft purposes. Therefore, bounty hunting of harbor seals and other marine mammals no longer occurs.
